How America Gives: Spotlight on Philadelphia
Dr. Peter Frumkin discusses the impact of religious giving in a recent WHYY Newsworks story Greater Philadelphia so-so at charitable giving. Dr. Frumkin is the new faculty director of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy and also new director of the Nonprofit Leadership Program in the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania.
In reference to the recent Chronicle of Philanthropy study “How America Gives”:
“The biggest proportion of giving is giving at churches and congregations,” Frumkin says. “So what the study is really tracking, in many ways, is levels of religious commitment and participation.”
Indeed, when you strip out religious giving from the latest numbers, Pennsylvania shoots up from 40th to fourth in states where people give the most, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s analysis.- Newsworks.org
