iDE Wins the $100,000 Lipman Family Prize of the Wharton School and The University of Pennsylvania: iDE, social enterprise dedicated to safe water and sanitation, won the inaugural Lipman Family Prize.
Toilets, Tony Blair, and other takeaways from this year’s Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF): iDE, as mentioned above, was also featured at this month’s Global Philanthropy Forum Annual Conference, at which Kat Rosqueta, our executive director, moderated a session on “Co-designing for impact”.

Fighting Hunger
Sharing the Bounty: Dining Hall Swipes as Hunger-Fighting Tool: Swipes for the Homeless is a nonprofit that grew out of a student group at UCLA that allows undergraduate students to donate their unused dining hall credits for those in need of food.
Public Health – clean cookstoves
A recent article in the Washington Post examined results of new studies (one called “Up In Smoke” from researchers at MIT and Harvard) looking at how much clean cookstoves improve air quality. The disappointing findings highlight two important points. First is the critical importance of bringing improved cooking options to families for both health and environmental reasons. Second is the continued need for adaptation of the cookstoves to local conditions as well as investment in programs to address the behavioral and cultural factors that inhibit or enhance day to day use of the stoves to ensure maximum impacts.
